For the past seven years, Chun You （春游） has been the most hotly anticipated time of the year for discerning music fans in Chengdu. This year 19-21 April, the organisers Morning 早上好 look to outdo themselves as they take us to a beautiful lakeside location near Emei, for a full three-night, camping experience.
Kiwese is here with what you need to know about this well-loved Chengdu indie festival.
From quiet beginnings, Chun You was first held at the first Morning Bar Flower Town location in 2013 to a small crowd of mostly musicians, friends and family. The festival has become bigger and better each year, later moving location to the utopian, swimming pool savvy chill zone of Morning House and last year to the grass lawn of the Fanmu Art Zone.
To illustrate the development of Chun You from a humble yard gathering to a full scale music festival, let us observe this Hiperson slideshow from 2015-2018:
Morning are the most locally minded crew in Chengdu – setting up a pop up hot pot restaurant on the lawn in front of the Main Stage last year – and this year they are set to go much further. As someone who has stumbled out of a tent at Chun You and eaten half a burnt pizza for survival, I am pleased to know this year Chun You will be hosting a food village on site with breakfast, lunch and dinner available throughout the festival.
This year will feature a whopping FOUR STAGES across the weekend: Main Stage for bands, Electronic Stage for live sets, Chill Stage in the Bar Zone for DJs and the Imagination Stage, basically the Psytrance camp.
As always, local talent is front and centre this year, featuring the usual suspects Stolen, The Hormones and Jahwahzoo on the Main Stage, as well as a debut appearance from Beijing’s Birdstriking and follow up from FAZI. With members of Hiperson away in London, the band will be sorely missed from the line up, their first omission since the festival started in 2013.
While the idea of a band appearing more than twice in a row at the same festival may seem repetitive to some, the charm and appeal of Chun You is that it features artists who are active in the scene and showcases their development over a long period of time, providing the soundtrack to the city we live in as it it too, develops. Artists practice all year for their Chun You appearance – it is the show that matters, the one that sticks.
Constantly hampered by noise complaints – resulting in Stolen’s closing set being cut short last year – Morning have decisively cut the bullshit by taking the festival right out of town to a distant lake area where there are no neighbouring residents to speak of.
This year, environmentalism lies at the heart of the festival — with recycled and eco-friendly materials used where possible. Each stage has been built within its own unique natural landscape. To love nature is to protect the environment. Expect to see more of the bamboo stages and festival accoutrements Morning are known for.
The excitement is palpable. The full outdoor experience means we finally get to have a proper, immersive three-day camping fest, something we haven’t had since Morning and NUTS Chongqing held the last NEVERLAND electronic music festival in 2016. Where to stay at Chun You?
One of my favourite things about Chun You is seeing how it evolves on previous experiences each year. From the Steam Hostel poolside tent rental service in 2016 (which basically resulted in drunk punters crashing in and around them throughout the weekend), to the swish set up from COART CAMP this year, Chun You are an ever growing organism of know-how and experience. We trust them to take care of us. Or at least throw a blanket over us when we’ve comaed out next to a burnt out campfire.
