In the last installment of our Womb and Strange Stains support artist series, say hello to Shponka.
Fit out with an incredible Funktion-One sound system, sleek minimal design and a delicious in-house bar/restaurant, Loopy in Hangzhou is one of my favourite venues in China. Hailing from the UK, recent Chengdu to Shanghai transplant DJ Shponka is our special guest for the Hangzhou show, helping us to put the sound system through its paces!
Shponka has played a wide range of gigs alongside friends Salif and Brother Jim, the trio loosely organised as the “Hoppers” collective for the past several years. His encyclopedic music knowledge, boundary crossing selections and penchant for the grittier side of guitar music have seen him devastate dancefloors at NUART Festival, Faux Club and some of Chengdu’s favourite bars Funky Town and Berlin Haus. Having just relocated to the glitz and glamour of Shanghai, Shponka joins us via the bullet train in Hangzhou for an evening of sumptuous selections and “galactic galvanisers pressed hot and direct from the botanic consciousness.” Look forward!

1）Can you describe your hometown? What was it like growing up there?
I’m from rural North Yorkshire – my ‘hometown’ is York but that’s actually a 30 minute yomp away by bus/car from where I grew up. My tiny village is one of several originally Nordic settlements with a population of about 2000 people, so to hang out with friends I’d need to travel to other villages. It was pretty hard to find transport between villages so there were a lot of campouts, house parties and cycling home in the dark.
2）What originally brought you to China? What is your current set up in Shanghai? The opportunity to imbibe new languages, music, cultures and lifestyles. Just moved to Shanghai so most of stuff is still in transit, but vinyl player, records and a controller.
3）Tell us about your background in music / DJing
Jammed with friends in bedrooms since adolescence, began DJing shows in China from 2016.
